Green veins, also known as varicose veins are a pretty common problem characterized by abnormally large veins near the skin’s surface, most frequently in the calves and thighs. They usually occur when the veins develop weakened walls or poorly functioning valves, which regulate blood flow. The appearance of bulging veins is also a major concern for many people. Common causes of varicose veins are heredity, working environments where a lot of standing is required, obesity, birth control pills, constipation and hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause. Standard treatments for varicose veins, both medical and surgical, can be quite expensive. Fortunately, there are a wide range of cost effective home remedies that can decrease the severity of varicose veins and also reduce some of the discomfort they can cause.

How to get rid of green veins

  • Grape seed extract:

Grape seeds contain antioxidants such as vitamin E, linoleic acid, and several types of flavonoids, which prevent radical damage to blood vessel walls. These components also promote collagen’s formation, helping to maintain the connective tissues’ elasticity and strengthen blood vessel walls. Grape seed can prevent fluid from leaking through veins as well as the swelling of legs associated with leakage. You can orally consume powdered grape seeds or grape seed oil. Using grape seed oil topically also help to relieve pain and inflammation.

  • Cayenne pepper:

Cayenne pepper contains adequate amounts of vitamin C and flavonoids, which protect blood vessel walls from free radical damage while promoting the formation of collagen to keep the vessels healthy and elastic. However, capsaicin, an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and blood thinning component, is the most potent component of cayenne pepper. You can take cayenne pepper powder orally starting with small doses of half a teaspoon mixed with a cup of water, increasing the dose gradually up to one tablespoon.

  • Olive oil massage:

When it comes to treating varicose veins, using olive oil to rub the affected area helps to increase blood flow, which reduces both pain and inflammation.

Slightly warm a mixture comprising of equal amounts of vitamin E oil and olive oil and use the warm mixture to massage your veins for a few minutes. Practice this routine twice a day for about two months. You can also massage the affected area using a mixture comprising of two teaspoons of warm olive oil and four drops of cypress essential oil.

  • Garlic:

Apart from helping to break up harmful toxins and improving circulation, garlic also provides an excellent remedy for several other symptom green veins such as inflammation. Put about six sliced garlic cloves, some freshly extracted orange juice, and two tablespoons of olive oil into a clean jar and allow the mixture sit for at least twelve hours.

In circular motions, use this mixture to massage inflamed veins for about five minutes and then use a cotton cloth to wrap the massaged area, leaving it on overnight. Repeat this routine every day for several months. You can also integrate fresh garlic to your diet.

  • Exercise:

Regularly getting exercise is one of the best things you can do to improve blood flow and lower inflammation, which you can add to the extensive list of exercise benefits. The  heart, blood and lung Institute states that sitting (especially with poor posture like forward head posture or your legs crossed) or standing for long period of time without moving around much is associated with an increased risk for green veins and other forms of blood pooling.  When you stay stagnant for too long, it’s harder for your veins to pump blood efficiently back to your heart and fight the effects of gravity. Exercise is also a great way to help balance hormones naturally, lose weight or maintain a healthy body weight, and lower blood pressure, which can all contribute to green veins.

  • Keep a healthy weight:

People who are overweight are more likely to develop varicose veins, especially overweight women and elderly people. Carrying excess body weight puts higher amounts of pressure on your veins and can contribute to inflammation or reflux, especially in the largest superficial veins, such as the saphenous vein in the legs.

  • Invest in anti-inflammatory diet:

Certain foods help reverse inflammation and improve blood flow, making it possible to heal varicose veins faster and prevent future ones from forming. A poor diet high in things like trans fats, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods can contribute to arterial damage, low circulation, blood pressure problems, hormonal imbalances and weight gain. Many of these foods are also high sodium foods, which is dehydrating, and contain toxins that can worsen swelling in varicose veins.

  • Witch hazel:

Apart from being an astringent, Witch Hazel also contains several essential oils and gallic acid, which help to reduce pain and inflammation. It also strengthens blood vessels.

Place a washcloth thoroughly soaked in witch hazel on the affected area about three times daily for two months. You can also add about 20 drops of distilled witch hazel to a tub filled with lukewarm water and soak your legs in this solution for fifteen minutes twice daily for two months.

  • Compression socks:

Some sites recommend compression stockings as a varicose vein cure. This is one of the only non-invasive recommendations that works in some cases. Especially if your green veins are small and in the early stages of development, it can be worth trying specially made compression garments to see if these can improve blood flow and minimize the veins. Larger varicose veins, and ones that have been visible for a while, tend to be less responsive to compression stockings.

Green veins can cause discomfort and make a person feel self-conscious. Treating varicose veins at home is possible, and diet and lifestyle changes may improve the symptom, people with severe varicose veins may wish to seek medical treatments to help reduce their appearance and improve symptoms.

Talking through the options with a doctor will help an individual make the best and most informed decision about the right treatment for them.
